Better returns come from understanding market requirements and ensuring lambs are selected accordingly.  Offering a mixed pen of lambs to the market is simple, but it will please no-one.  The answer is to regularly handle lambs, treat them as individuals and offer them to specific market outlets, whether it is a private butcher or an export buyer.  Each market sector has separate requirement, but broadly all markets require lambs that are the right weight with good conformation and not over fat.  Projects run by EBLEX under the two year Defra-funded Better Returns Programme showed that producers who selected lambs to match market needs made up to an extra £2.10 per lamb.  Click here for more information about selecting the right lambs for the market.

Lamb Selection Training Days

Held in abattoirs across England, these practical hands-on events enable producers to handle live lambs under the guidance of trained staff from MLC Commercial Services and then view and assess the same lambs as carcases.  Subjects covered include the EUROP classification grid, factors affecting killing out percentages and understanding dressing specifications.  These events are for a maximum of 12 people.  All training materials and a light lunch will be provided.  To find out about events in your area, or to reserve a place please call Hellen or Sandra on 0870 609 1840 or email events@brp.org.uk
